Debris Remains After ADS Cleaning: When Screening First Helps

28 October 2026
In the VDSC+ADS combination, VDSC first screens out larger and smaller impurities.

A different separation method can help

ADS handles most grain-cleaning jobs on its own. When a lot contains substantial impurities that differ in size from the grain but continue traveling with it during airflow cleaning, screening first can make the process more efficient. VDSC removes those impurities by size before ADS completes the cleaning and grading.

Let the leftover material guide the choice

Look at the material that remains mixed with the useful grain. Is it clearly larger or smaller than the kernels?

That size difference gives screening a useful job. ADS separates material by its behavior in airflow, so some impurities similar in weight to the grain can stay with it despite having a different size. A screen adds a way to remove those impurities that another ADS pass may not fully address.

If the remaining material is close to the grain’s size, screening may offer little additional separation. Metra can assess the mixture and recommend a suitable approach.

What screening first contributes

In the VDSC+ADS combination, VDSC first screens out larger and smaller impurities. ADS then performs final airflow cleaning and separates the grain into fractions for different uses.

For lots that otherwise need repeated ADS passes to remove size-different impurities, this combination can shorten processing time. Each machine contributes a different function: VDSC handles size separation, while ADS finishes cleaning and grading.

The useful result is less unwanted material in the grain while keeping useful kernels in the intended fractions. A sample test lets Metra demonstrate that result with your material.

Keep one cleaner when one does the job

If your ADS already delivers the cleaning result you need, there is no reason to add screening. VDSC becomes a useful addition when removing size-different impurities first helps the ADS finish the job with fewer repeated passes. Standalone VDSC can also be sufficient when size screening alone removes the unwanted material.

Use both when the lot needs both functions: size removal that air alone struggles to accomplish, followed by airflow cleaning. The reason to add screening is the debris in your grain—not simply the availability of a two-machine setup.
